UK Scallops
The UK scallop FIP Action Plan identifies 15 actions to address over the five-year duration of the FIP, covering 20 of the MSC Standard performance indicators. Each action consists of multiple milestones.
To reach the best practice level of the MSC Standard (SG 80), this FIP is focussing on:
Principle 1 (stock status):
Working with the relevant scientific bodies to define stock areas;
Defining appropriate reference points;
Developing a harvest strategy;
Developing harvest control rules and tools that apply at stock level; and
Gathering additional survey information on data poor stocks.
Principle 2 (environment):
Understanding the catch composition;
Identifying interactions with endangered, threatened and protected (ETP) species and developing additional management requirements in an ETP strategy;
Assessing the impact of the fishery on commonly encountered and VME habitats impacts;
Developing a UK scallop habitat management plan;
Introducing vessel monitoring systems on all vessels to accurately and reliably record the activity of the fishery; and
Undertaking an ecosystem Scale, Intensity, Consequence Analysis (SICA).
Principle 3 (management):
Developing a Fisheries Management Plan that includes short- and long-term fishery objectives;
Establishing regional management groups that are appropriate for each stock unit; and
Documenting stakeholder roles and responsibilities.
Progress and Updates
More detail on the progress against these actions can be found in the FIP Action Plan. There is overlap between this and the Channel scallop FIP, both in terms of species and Steering Group membership, and the groups are seeking to harmonise their management strategies where possible.
The priorities and challenges are highlighted in the MSC Performance Indicator Graph (right) and correspond to the three principles of the MSC Standard.
The UK scallop FIP is independently assessed by FisheryProgress.org. The UK scallop FIP pre-assessment (conducted in 2019) is available here.
More information about the FIP’s activity in its final year can be read in the Project UK Annual Report (2022-2023)
The UK scallop FIP is supported by dedicated experts representing a range of stakeholder organisations.
